The
Friends of St Nicholas was formed in 1995, to raise funds
to help keep the 900-year-old church of St Nicholas in
good repair for present-day use and future generations.
All
the fundraising is directed towards the fabric and maintenance
of this Grade II*- listed building. We do not fund the
day-to-day running of the church. The churchyard and parish
burial ground are maintained by the Great Wakering Parish
Council.
Since
1995, our fundraising has led to several grants from,
among others, English Heritage and the Friends of Essex
Churches. We have supported major repairs to the tower,
the spire and roof, as well as numerous smaller repairs
around the church.
Most
of our members live locally, but we also have many members
with past connections with Great Wakering who now live
outside the village.
We
run a year-round programme of fundraising activities,
including coffee mornings, talks and coach trips to places
of interest. See some of our events here.
All our activities are really well supported. The Friends
play a useful part in promoting community life in the
village, as well as raising funds for St Nicholas Church
building.
Come
and join us!
